Wiki loves monuments II

Overview

After the conclusion of the Wiki Loves Monuments project (should occurs end November2011), I'm proposing to capitalize on the result of it by launching, early in 2012, a secondstep of this project. The aim of this second step is to provide, for each Cultural good of national importance (around 3000 objects), a textual description available on 4 different Wikipedias (ie. English, German, French and Italian).

Rational

During the WLM contest, we had the chance to get in touch with almost all key actors inthe Swiss world of National monuments. Contacts where goods and all involved people appreciate this project (both as a concept and in it's realization). As this project was initiated and leaded by Wikimedia CH, these partners would not be surprised it the same association would come again with another project in the same area.

Description

Step 1: Workshop

As a first step, I suggest to organize a 2 days workshop inviting all interested people (i.e.federal and cantonal authorities as well as interested groups and associations). The goal of this workshop would be to create a baseline for the project, getting the agreement of all players, defining roles and responsibilities and agreeing on a time-line, a budget and asteering committee. This workshop should ideally take place during the first quarter of the year, knowing that the preparation could already start before year-end.

Step 2: Project kick off

Based on the output of the project, the team should then start working on a road map, defining in details milestones and deliverables. These documents should be approved by the steering committee during a project kick off meeting where the project would be officially launched.

Step 3: Pilot / proof of concept (optional step)

Whenever needed or requested, a pilot phase could be first launched in order to treat, for instance, all articles belonging to a canton in order to validate the feasibility and get some experience and feedback. Each item on the list of the Cultural goods of national importance should be treated as follows:

  • redaction of a first article, in one language only, and validation of this article
  • translation of the article in the 3 other languages
  • deployment of all versions in the different Wikipedia's instances

Step 4: Global deployment

Based on the learning of step 3 (if any), the project team will then open all items to betreated. During this process, regular feedback will be provided to the steering committee, including the progress status and any concern or issue.

Parallel step: Picture contest for cantonal goods

During this project, we could as well continue on the picture's track by organizing another contest based on the goods of cantonal importance. In my opinion, this activity should take place in the frame of another distinct project and (most important) should be divided in parts by canton (and not anymore in the frame of a single global contest).

Requirements

Below is an estimation of the requirements for this project. Please note that it seems quite obvious that it will not be finished in one year and, therefore, that costs and involvement will be split in 2 or 3 years.

Resources

Resources for this project includes (at least) :

  • steering committee members, to pilot the project
  • project coordinator, to lead the project and follow up in the execution
  • articles writers and translators

If SC members should be benevols, the project coordinator should most probably be hired person, with a first estimate of a 50% FTE (full-time equivalent). Articles writers and translators should be payed people, probably with a fixed rate (per article for instance). Other tasks, as communication with the press and relation with Wikipedia's communities could be achieved within Wikimedia CH.

Budget

Global estimation for the budget shows:

  • Step 1 : 10'000 CHF (facilities and participant's expenses for transport and meals, assuming hotel is not payed by the association)
  • Step 2-3 : 50'000 CHF per year (including project's coordinator's salary, payment of the articles and expenses for the whole project's team)

Please note that part of this budget could be covered either by sponsors or by other participants. Anyhow, WM CH should be ready to cover 100% of the costs in case no other financial support can be found.
