Wiki Loves monuments in Switzerland is a project launched by Wikimedia CH, the Swiss chapter of the global Wiki Loves Monuments project initiated on Wikimedia Commons.

The project is basically initiated following the announcement of the Federal Office of Culture to provide subventions for projects related to photography in Switzerland (http://www.bak.admin.ch/themen/kulturfoerderung/01103/index.html?lang=fr).

Goal of the project

To organize a national contest in order to provide at least one free picture of each item listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National significance. Project overview

Timeline

See Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011_in_Switzerland/Timeline for more details

We will create a web site that explains the concept and the rules of the game. On this site, people will be able to:

  • see the list of items to be photographed by canton
  • register themselves
  • announce a picture be indicating the item and the link on Commons

Once the web site will be created, we will make sure to broadcast this event as wildly as possible, via the press and an information letter send to all clubs, associations, or groups that could be interested.

The contest itself will be open for 3 months during this summer, from be beginning of July till end of September. During all this time, people will upload on Commons self-made pictures of items from the Inventory of Cultural Property of National significance and announce it on the dedicated web server. At the end of the given period, a jury of 5 people will select around 15 winner's pictures. We will then organize a ceremony (in Bern), inviting all people having registered pictures. During this ceremony prices and awards will be distributed to the winners.

Benefits

For us, there will be two major benefits :

  1. improve the visibility of the association by organizing and leading a national event.
  2. provide with free pictures of as many items of the Inventory of Cultural Property of National significance as possible.

Resources

Budget

The budget of this project has three main cost-centers :

  • communication and information, including the web site that will be used to track registrations of pictures
  • the ceremony event

The sponsoring from the Culture Office should cover a maximum of 50% of the project, the remaining 50% will have to be paid by the association or third party.

The associated cost could be :

  1. promote the project and recruite photographs
  2. reimburse costs for photographers (transport, mealls)
  3. offer prices and recognition to best photos
  4. to document endangered sites or closed sites
  5. build an "open" archive of photos to be used for free
